ABOUT

A paper battery is a storage device, which is very thin and flexible in energy production. The paper battery is also known as Nano Composite Paper since it is made using carbon nanotubes and paper.

Paper batteries=Carbon nano tubes + cellulose(paper)

HISTORY :

First, they developed the design of paper batteries in August 2007. Later in December 2009 at Stanford University, Yi Cui and his team successfully inverted the prototype which provides 1.5V as it’s the terminal voltage.

What is carbon nanotubes?

»  Simply carbon is accomplished with many allotropes like a diamond, graphite, etc. Carbon nanotubes are also one of the carbon allotropes. In carbon nanotubes, each carbon is acting with all other three carbon atoms to form a nano-size cylindrical structure.

WORKING :

Similar to the working of normal batteries where ions and electrons move between the electrodes, anode, and cathode. Due to the flow of electrons from the cathode to anode, current starts flowing from anode to cathode.

In paper batteries, lithium(metal) is used as anode and carbon nanotubes as a cathode, cellulose (paper) as the separator. Due to the chemical reaction between the carbon and electrolyte, electrons are generated. The reaction between electrolyte and metal, ions are generated. These electrons flow through the external circuit from cathode to anode and current flows in its opposite direction.
