The single-phase induction motor is the most widely used machine in our home for different applications. It includes Ceiling Fan, Motor-pumps, AC Compressor unit, etc.
The single-phase induction motor is not self-starting and it requires some starting methods for the proper running of the machine that is the main reason we use capacitors. You may ask why the motor is not self-starting since the main and simple thing comes into our mind is that the electrical appliance should run when we give electricity to the appliance. But there are some things we should know about the single-phase supply and it is like a sea-wave which switches between positive and negative cycles.
When we give a single-phase supply to the motor, the motor receives electrical power and stator winding is energized creating an emf which in turn produces a stator flux and that emf is induced in rotor creating a rotor flux and now since the single-phase supply has both positive and negative cycles during 0,180 degrees the resultant torque is zero but during positive half +90 degree the forward flux is induced and during negative half -90 degree reverse flux is induced and since the stator and rotor flux is always in phase with each other the forward and reverse flux is in equal and opposite to each other. Thus the net torque is zero and this phenomenon is also known as Double Field Revolving Theory, Hence the motor does not rotate unless and until manually we give a starting torque or else we use any one of the starting methods.

» Capacitor-Start Capacitor Run Induction Motor
In our Home, the ceiling fan is the capacitor start-run type which is used for both start and running. In this case, the stator consists of main and auxiliary winding. The auxiliary winding is provided with a capacitor in series with the supply. The main winding is directly connected to the supply. The capacitor has this cool property of leading the current by 90 degree thus creating a phase shift. Due to difference in a phase shift in both main and auxiliary winding the rmf (Rotating magnetic field) is produced in the stator. Also induced in the rotor creating rotor flux and due to the rmf the motor starts to rotate. Similarly the motor pump and AC compressor unit has also a capacitor which is used for the proper function of the electrical appliance.
